Youth Parliament (TST)

To commemorate the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, the Sint Maarten National Commission for UNESCO and the Africa Caribbean Heritage Alliance (ACHA) showed the DVD, ‘The Middle Passage’ and held a discussion with the members of the Youth Parliament on Friday August 21, 2015 at 7pm at the Rupert Maynard Center in St. Peters.

The DVD, ‘the Middle Passage’, which can now be borrowed at our local library, Philipsburg Jubilee Library, is told by an enslaved person of African Descent who was sold into slavery by the King of Dahomey. The film gives a visual imagery of the journey from his home and life on the ship.

The main objective of the viewing of the DVD is to ‘break the silence’ on the Slave Trade, Slavery and their consequences, and to promote intercultural dialogue.

The Sint Maarten National Commission for UNESCO would like to thank Ms. Connie Gumbs-Francis, and Ms. Brenda Maynard for giving us this opportunity to engage the Youth Parliamentarians in this dialogue about this aspect of our history. ‘Lest We Forget!’
